Transitioning Microsoft 365 authentication from Exchange Web Services (EWS) to the Microsoft Graph API

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Einstein Activity Capture (EAC) is transitioning its Microsoft 365 authentication from Exchange Web Services (EWS) to the Microsoft Graph API.

This move is required because Microsoft is retiring EWS for Exchange Online in October 2026. Transitioning to Microsoft Graph provides a more modern, secure, and scalable connection.

Key Transition Details

  • Availability: The migration feature became available starting in February 2026.

  • Automatic Enrollment: Orgs setting up EAC with Microsoft 365 starting in the Spring '26 release are automatically authenticated via Microsoft Graph.

  • Migration Tool: Salesforce provides a single-click migration tool to move existing EWS connections to Microsoft Graph.

  • Impact on Sync: Microsoft Graph has stricter concurrency limits than EWS, which may lead to more frequent throttling and potential sync delays initially.

Why the Switch is Necessary

Microsoft first announced the deprecation of EWS in 2018 and confirmed it will be disabled in Exchange Online by October 2026. Switching to Microsoft Graph is essential for any organization using EAC to avoid service disruptions and maintain compliance with evolving security standards.
